Motorola Droid Phone and USB Drivers and Windows 7 x64 Oh My!

Getting my Motorola Droid phone to be recognized with the USB drivers on my Windows 7 x64 system seemed to be a lot more work than you would think it should be.  Following the standard USB driver installation instructions did not work for me.  I had to manually configure the drivers to work with my device by following these steps.

1) Download the Android SDK which includes the USB drivers for windows here.

2) Open the Control Panel on my computer.  Under Hardware and Sound select “View devices and printers”.

3) There was a Motorla device that had problems with the drivers.  Right click and View Properties.

4) Click the Hardware tab and click the Properties button.

5) Click the Change settings button on the General tab.

6) Click the driver tab and click the Update Driver button…

7) Choose the option to “Browse my computer for driver software”

8) Navigate to the USB Drivers folder.  For me it was [SDK Install Location]\android-sdk-windows\usb_driver.  Click Next.  The driver should be updated now and your device should be usable for deployment!
